2010 Welcome from Joanne!

Welcome to the Big Stone Lake Farmers Market!  We are busy preparing for the 2010 season, which will start on Saturday, June 5.  As of this posting, the location of the market will be the Columbian Hotel in downtown Ortonville, but it is possible that this might change in the near future.  We will try to keep everyone updated as the opening date nears.

 The Farmers Market will be held on Saturdays from June through October.  Market times are from 8:30 am to noon.  Some vendors may also sell produce on Tuesday afternoons from 3 to 6 pm, depending on weather and availability.

 We are currently looking for new vendors for this year’s market.  If you are interested in becoming a vendor, or would simply like more information, please contact Mike Jorgenson at 320-273-2437.

“2009 has been a great year for the Big Stone Lake Farmers Market.  Much thanks goes to the market vendors and customers who helped make this season so successful.  The 2010 market will begin the first Saturday in June.

The farmers market is just one part of our fledgling local foods initiative.  A highly energized, highly talented group of people are getting together to work on projects that will improve both the production and the use of food grown in the Big Stone Lake area.  If anyone is interested in being a part of this effort, please leave a comment with your name and email address, and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Market Update

Here at Big Stone Lake we have a thriving market selling high quality, affordable, locally produced food.  Oftentimes our vendors will sell out of goods before the official closing time.  If the vendors sell out, the market may close earlier than the scheduled times.  In other words, come early!  In general, there are more vendors selling on Saturday morning than there are on Tuesday afternoons.

  In 2009, the market features fresh fruits and vegetables including berries, breads and desserts.  For example, at the market on July 25 the market had seven vendors selling:

Peppers (bell and jalapeno)

 Sweet corn season is right around the corner.  Later this summer we will have vendors selling apples, honey, jams and other canned goods, winter squash and turkey.
